The College Planning and Career Exploration Seminar!
The college application process can seem confusing and, at times, even frustrating. Before you begin filling out applications, familiarize yourself with the process so you stay on top of it. The resources listed on this site will help you get started. There are literally thousands of possible websites that could be listed but I have tried to list the most common and/or the most useful here. (If you come across other sites that you think should be on here, just let me know...I'm glad to add to our lists!)
Exploring careers can also seem like a daunting task....there are so many choices! One of the most common questions that college students ask is, 'What can I do with a major in......?" Even parents and well-meaning friends will sometimes ask, "What will you do with a major in THAT?" (in a voice that suggests the major has no redeeming economic value whatsoever and if you choose it you are forever doomed to unemployment!!). So we'll be spending some time exploring college majors and careers and tackling THAT question so you'll know how to begin to answer it for yourself.
We have guest speakers, college visits and assignments to take you through the processes of learning about college planning and careers. The course is designed in seminar format to facilitate class discussion and sharing of information and ideas.
For this class, we are using the book, 'College Admission - from application to acceptance, step by step' as our text. As the name implies, every step of the college admissions process is included. There's also lots of great information on their companion website so check it out, too! The book + the website are great places for students and parents to start learning about the college admissions process.
(NOTE: SJS is providing each student in the course with a copy of the book so there is no need to buy one on your own!!)
