about the instructorAnne Hardin Ballard holds a B.A. in General Social Sciences (emphasis in History and English) and an M.A. in counseling, both from the University of Oregon. She has also completed post-master's work in psychology, communications and career counseling. Currently, she teaches the college planning course at SJS, produces the SJS yearbook and heads the SJS fundraising committee.
She spent nearly ten years working in community colleges as an academic adviser, counselor and career specialist until 1984 when she was hired by Linfield College as its first Director of Career Services. During her twenty-eight years at Linfield, she developed a career center which included programs to help students decide on majors and careers, learn to write resumes, succeed at job interviewing, obtain internships, and apply to graduate school. She also scheduled recruiters, organized job and graduate school fairs, conducted numerous workshops and taught career planning courses. She worked with career directors from around the state to provide collaborative programs and services and was one of the founding members of the Oregon Liberal Arts Placement Consortium. Outside of career services, she initiated the community service office (now Civic Engagement and Service) and the alternative spring break program at Linfield and in the process, learned how to fundraise to support those programs including founding the Oregon Brews and BBQ's (now under the auspices of another organization). Ballard is active in her high school reunion group, completed two terms on the University of Oregon Alumni Association Board of Directors and is the wedding coordinator and unofficial historian at her church. She loves Jane Austen novels, and movies based on those novels, and she likes to read books about Oregon and Civil War history (her great-grandfather fought in the battle at Gettysburg). In her very younger years, she lived in Seoul, Korea and Paris, France. She makes pretty good pies. She loved Downton Abbey when it was on, HGTV and, (shhhhh) Forensic Files. She and her husband (a graduate of the US Naval Academy and Lewis and Clark law school) have three rescue kitties, five adult children (three are college graduates - OSU, Pacific University and Smith College/MBA-Washington University), and 14 grandchildren - two of whom are students at SJS!
