College search - getting the right fit
Peterson's Guide to Colleges, the book, published annually, is the most traditional way to start searching for colleges and universities. Peterson's also has a website. My suggestion is to use both resources. Browsing through the book will give you ideas about possibilities that you may not yet have considered and the information is all right there without the eternal clicking around to find the information. The website, of course, allows you to do some things, such as sorting based on majors and size of institution, that you can't do with the book. Peterson's is a great first resource to begin developing a list of schools that you might be interested in. Nearly all high schools will have this book available.
Princeton Review provides another series that has lots of college information - the best colleges, the best value colleges, the top 378 colleges, etc - any of which may be of interest to you as you search for the right college. Here is a link to their Random House publisher where you can see all the different books they have as well as order them!

Search and sort sites: Check them out - although all of these sites are all a little different, you may find one in particular that you like using. They will likely all yield a slightly different list of possibilities but that's a good thing - you'll have that many more to consider before narrowing down your list. But, pay particular attention to colleges that show up on several lists - those may be just what you're looking for!

What Everyone Gets Wrong About Where You Go to College
How to do a college search - from 'Colleges that Change Lives' - a step by step on how to find the right school for you
The Insider's Guide to the Colleges 2015 - Although this book covers only about 300 colleges and universities, what is particularly helpful are some of the categories that may help you to think about what's important to you in choosing a college even if the schools you are considering aren't listed in this book - for example, schools with no fraternities or sororities, schools with 1500 - 5000 undergrads etc. Also, the 'insider information' may prompt you with questions about the schools you are considering.

Just for parents - There are several resources for parents to learn about the college application procedure.
Our text book for this course, 'College Admission...from application to acceptance,, step by step' is one of the best resources you will find. I highly recommend that parents read it along with their student.
Another excellent book as a comprehensive guide to getting into college is: 'Admission Matters - What students and Parents need to know about Getting into College' by Springer, Reider and Morgan. It is also a book for students and parents.
There are also a few websites directed specifically to parents:
National Association for College Admission Counseling
